The Healing Power of Cayenne

It is said that the word Cayenne comes from kian, a word originating from the Tupi Indians of the north eastern South America. This pepper is known for its healing power and has been used for centuries for such ailments as toothaches, scabies, rotting teeth, conveniences to cold stomach, kidney stones and to takeout dimness of site. Plant resembling cayenne was described in 1552 in the Aztec herbal, The Bandanius Manuscript and was used for the above ailments.

Samuel Thomson (1769-1843) was an early American herbalist that used cayenne as an herbal remedy. He believed that most diseases were caused by cold and cured with heat. He discovered cayenne in 1805 while visiting a cabin in New Hampshire. The dried cayenne peppers were hanging from a string and he found them topossess the necessary heat. He believed the peppers would retain the heat in the body until all of the necessary “cankers of the body” were removed. By 1839 it is estimated that Thomson had three million adherents at the time that was one sixth of the population.

It is known that in 1909 and then in 1912, the British Medical Association published two volumes concerning “secret remedies”. The association performed chemical analysis of these remedies and found many of them contained high quantities of capsicum or cayenne. Many of these remedies claimed to help with backaches, kidney performance, earaches, gout, acid related dyspepsia, liver cancer Research that suggests capsicum is able to kill prostate cancer cells by forcing them to undergo apoptosis. It was also found by the University of Nottingham in England that capsicum triggered apoptosis in lung and pancreatic cancer cells.

It is very interesting that the ancient Aztecs ‘ found the healing power of cayenne many centuries ago. Nature is a beautiful balance, within only feet of a poison grows the antidote.
